Does your store cater to a particular region of the world? Perhaps you have a MultiStore where the different storefronts you operate apply to different countries? Then you may want to consider Google Webmaster Tools Geotargeting.
If your site domain happens to be country-coded ( .ie, .ca, .fr, .de, etc.), then it will already be Geotargeted and you can carry on with your business knowing that local searches will have your site included. On the other hand, if your site uses a generic domain (.com, .org, .net, etc.), then you can utilize the Geotargeting tool to assist Google with determining where your site appears when local searches are performed.
When Google searches are performed locally (such as using the ‘Region’ option in Advanced Search, or ‘Nearby’ in the Search Tools, etc.), your site may not place well in the search results if the domain is not country-coded for that search area. When you use Geotargeting to set a target country for your site, it will behave as if it is coded for that country, allowing your site to show in local search results more favorably.
When is it a good idea to use the Geotargeting tool? When you wish to have your site targeted to a single specific country, such as a restaurant or local services business, and your website uses a generic domain.
When is it not a good idea to use the Geotargeting tool? If you want to target multiple countries, or if your domain is already country-coded, then this will not help with the search results.
