Managing Product Ratings in AspDotNetStorefront

AspDotNetStorefront has a built-in method to increase your sales and gain valuable information at the same time, with just the click of a button: Ratings. With this tool enabled, your customers can rate your products using a five-star system and add useful comments about the products.

If you have ever purchased something from Amazon.com, then you most likely considered the ratings and read a review or two about a product you were interested in that affected your decision. Perhaps you have even come to rely on these useful customer ratings and reviews. Studies have shown that product ratings and reviews increase sales for stores using this tool.

It is a very simple process to enable this feature in your AspDotNetStorefront:

1)      Set the AppConfig: RatingsEnabled to true

Once you have enabled ratings for your store, there are a few other AppConfigs that affect the operation, and are set for optimal functionality by default. The only other setup you need to consider is creating a list of ‘Badwords’ which allows you to filter out inappropriate comments automatically. This menu is found in: Configuration > Polls and Reviews > Manage Badwords

Add your Badwords one at a time

In this tool you enter single words only, one at a time. Enter all possible variations as well, as the search routine only looks for exact matches. For example, if you enter ‘cheese’ as a bad word, the word ‘cheesy’ in a comment will not be flagged.

The only option available when submitting a bad word is the checkbox to make the word apply to all comments or only for new comments.

Hint: The software does not display the list of bad words that have been entered in the admin console. Query the database for these values if you need to review the list:

Once you receive ratings and comments, you will have the opportunity to Manage Ratings , which allows you to view, edit and delete the ratings and comments posted by your customers.

Sort, edit, and delete your ratings and reviews

When editing ratings and comments, keep in mind that the intent here is to clean up comments (grammar and spelling) and correct accidental ratings, not to manipulate the results. It is in your best interest to allow the customers to voice their opinions concerning the products, as negative ratings and comments can actually help you sell by expressing to the potential buyers that your site is honest. Most buyers are also savvy enough to understand reviews and weigh the good and bad reviews appropriately.

When your customer’s cursor hovers over the ‘Place Order’ button, they will be more apt to press it when they are confident in their product knowledge. Ratings and comments from actual consumers are the most honest means to accomplish this quickly.
