How To Create Messages In The New Promo Engine

The Promotions Engine or “Promo Engine” is one of the new features introduced in the latest release of our online shopping cart, MSx 9.3. With this Promo Engine, you are now able to offer exactly the types of promotions that best fit your products and are most attractive to your customers. (see my previous article, The Power of Promotions).

Below are some great tips to assist you with customer messaging when using the Promo Engine. Be prepared to unleash the power of the promo engine!

In this blog post I’ll show you how to make sure that the promotional messages your customers see are clear and compelling and don’t leave them confused. I’ll show you the critical spots you need to pay attention to in order to make sure that your prospect understands what they are going to get when they use a coupon code, and what they got after they use it.

Given the new-ness of the Promo Engine, I’ll briefly cover basics and bring you through to customer messaging.

Where Is It & How Do I Use It?

MSx Promo Engine Menu

To find your way to the new Promo Engine in the MSx 9.3 Admin Console choose:
Configuration –>
Pricing and Promotions –>

(If you’ve moved up from a previous version of AspDotNetStorefront software, you’ll notice it has taken the place of Coupons).

Promotion Engine Editor MSx

You’ll arrive on the home screen of the Promotions Editor.

If you have upgraded, you will find a full, paginated listing of all of your coupon codes from your previous experience in the Admin Console. What was previously your Coupon Code is now your Promo Code and Promo Title. Your existing coupons have been converted to Promos, which can be continued, edited or de-activated as needed.

If you’re on a brand new store, your screen will not be populated with data.

Setting Up A New Promotion

Promotion Edit Screen

Once you click on the “Add New Promo” button, you will find yourself in the individual promotion administration screen of the Promotions Editor.

In order to help you to know what to fill in for these fields, I will show you where they end up in the Front End, or User Experience. The promotion example I use is a Buy One Get One promotion (for more detail on BOGO promotions, see my previous article). I have set it to “Auto Applied” in this scenario.

The Promo Title is for internal Admin use.

Promo Code is the code which calls the promotion into action. If Auto Applied is selected, the promo will automatically apply when the criteria are met (criteria are set in the section to the right of this section in your Admin Console). If not Auto Applied, the customer will need to enter the code on the Shopping Cart page.

It will be beneficial to explain the rest of these fields in relation to where they appear throughout the User Experience.

The first places a user may encounter the Promo is either on the Category Page or on the Product Page, depending on how they navigate through your site, if you have selected “Auto Applied”.  This is the “Product Discount Alert” field.  It will appear on products/categories you select within parameter settings.

The message in this field will appear equally on all products included in the promotion, so you will want to use clear messaging. I have opted to use the default “Special Offer!” message, but could equally use another simple teaser, like “Gift With Purchase!”  You may also want to add a brief explanation of your promotion, or perhaps repeat the coupon image you have used in an email promotion.

NOTE: If you have not selected “Auto Applied” the “Product Discount Alert” will not display on either the Category Page nor the Product Page.

The Shopping Cart Page

With “Auto Applied” selected, the Promotion appears on the Shopping Cart page, without the customer having to enter a code into the Special Offer section.   NOTE: If you do not select “Auto Applied” the visitor will need to enter the code  and click “Add” for the promotion to apply.

The “Discount Description Message” will appear in the shopping cart and on the order receipt below the product to which the promotion applies. It serves as a reminder to the prospect of the promotion they are taking advantage of.

The Order Notification/Receipt

**By default, only the “Discount Description Message” will appear on the receipt. You’ll notice that the “Promo Code” also appears on the above example. This feature is not an Out-of-the-Box feature, however, if you find it useful (administratively speaking) to display the “Promo Code”, please download it for FREE here.

INSTRUCTIONS: simply drop the XML package in your {root}/XmlPackages folder, and then change the XmlPackage.OrderReceipt AppConfig to be ‘notification.receiptwithpromos.xml.config’ (no quotes).

Already on MSx 9.3, or thinking about it?

If you haven’t yet upgraded your AspDotNetStorefront shopping cart to the latest, 9.3, you’ll want to consider doing so sooner rather than later to start making use of the great new Promo Engine.

For those of you with customizations on your current version, we recommend simplifying your upgrade path. An Upgrade Assessment might be just the thing you need to start planning your upgrade to 9.3.

Alternatively, you can find a list of qualified Development Partners on our website to upgrade your store.

Or perhaps you know you’re ready to go and the Upgrade Service Pack is right up your alley…

Feel free to ask us on Live Chat at AspDotNetStorefront.com or phone us: 602-490-0243… or leave a comment below!
