MoreStore Strategy: Our implementation of MoreStores focuses on showcasing special sales in an unconventional retail setting. Every March, the world’s truck drivers gather in Louisville, KY for the Mid-America Truck Show, a trade show of giant proportions that features thousands of exhibitors. The traditional method for an exhibiting retailer is to bring in a limited amount of physical stock and sell items to drivers as they walk around the show. This greatly limits the selection of products, and many customers don’t have the desire or ability to carry their purchases around all day – no matter how great the sale.
Our MoreStores gave us a massive advantage. We built two MoreStores specifically for use on an iPad, and placed purchasing “kiosks” in two of our product suppliers’ booths. Each MoreStore was tailored specifically to that supplier, and listed our retail pricing for the items on display in their booths. Because our product suppliers do not sell directly to the public, in years past, if a customer wanted retail pricing, they would have to find a retailer later and inquire about a product. The conversion rates were not great. A customer would have to really, really want a product and remember it later, after a full day of walking around the convention! With our MoreStore iPad kiosks, they were able to look up OUR pricing for the product within seconds, and even place an order for those items. The orders were shipped directly from our store to the customer. In some cases, the orders arrived before our customers got home from the Truck Show.
We also ran limited-time, deeply discounted sales on some of the most popular items from each manufacturer and advertised them through the kiosks. Even if a customer didn’t place an order, having the information about our pricing at their fingertips definitely piqued their curiosity and raised our store’s profile. We found this method to be infinitely easier than spending tens of thousands of dollars on our own booth, which would have been much smaller and less visible than the booths of our suppliers. We hope to take these kiosks to several other trucking industry trade shows across the country later this year.
